Registration for the 2024 Rumble opens November 2, 2023 at 12:00 a.m. PDT. All registration will be handled through Ultra Signup at this link: https://ultrasignup.com/entrants_event.aspx?did=103689

The total number of entrants allowed in the Rumble will be 625, both distances combined. There will be no waitlist.

40-mi starts at 7 a.m. (No Early Start)
Trail Marathon starts at 8 a.m.
20-mi starts at 9 a.m.

This is a fun, low-key event utilizing the Peterson Ridge and Metolius-Windigo multi-use trails near Sisters, OR. Bring a great sense of adventure and you’ll enjoy it! There are three distances in the event: 40 miles, marathon, and 20 miles. All races will start and finish at Sisters Middle School.

This race is a fundraiser for the Sisters High School Cross Country team. Many of the volunteers are cross country team members. The Rumble also make a generous annual donation to Sisters Trails Alliance, who builds the beautiful Rumble trails that wouldn’t exist without them. You can make a donation to either of these great organizations as part of your registration.

Rumble Training Plan Add-On: We offer an optional training plan for all distances. They are 16-week plans designed by Rumble founder and race director, and long-time coach, Sean, and available during registration as an add-on for an additional $50.

No refunds, transfers to other runners, or transfers to other years. Please do not ask. Even if or Whatabout. You will be disappointed with my non-response. If you cannot run for any reason, please know your entry is going to a good cause. It’s a donation to the Sisters High School Cross Country Team. They thank you for your support.

Check-In & Packet Pick-Up

We will have two days of pre-race packet pickup at Blazin Saddles bike shop in Sisters. Blazin Saddles is located at 413 W Hood Ave. Please do your best to pick up your packet at Blazin Saddles, as this will help alleviate lines on race morning. The packet pickup volunteers, i.e., my parents, greatly appreciate your help with this.

Race Start & Finish Location

Sisters Middle School, 15200 McKenzie Highway, Sisters, OR

Directions to Start: 1/2 mile west of Sisters on Hwy 242, on the south side of the highway. The start is actually in a small parking area at the corner of Hwy 242 and Edgington (just west of the Middle School parking lot).

Parking: Please park in the two main Sisters Middle School parking lots off of Hwy 242.

Post Race

We will have a post-race feast featuring Longboard Louie’s catering with their excellent burritos (from full-on carnivore to full-on vegan, and everything in between), Sisters Bakery treats, and other food and drink starting about 11:30 a.m., with an awards ceremony about 12:30 p.m. for the 20-mi, 1 p.m. for the marathon, about 1:30 p.m. for the 40-mi. All human participants will be able to shower in the Sisters Track field house locker rooms.

Awards

Top 3 overall female and male, top masters female and male (45-59), and top veteran female and male (60+) in all races will receive some cool schwag. Also, the top dogs in any of the races will receive a bag of doggy goodness!

All finishers will receive a super cool pair of stylin’ Rumble finisher’s socks. Yes, this is the sock that started the whole finisher-sock craze! Some of you may wonder, why socks instead of shirts? Well, I figure that most runners have lots and lots (and lots and lots…) of race shirts, many of which never get worn. I also figure that most runners go through socks pretty quickly. So I thought it would be fun to award something that runners wear-out fairly quickly, not something that runners tend to already have too many of. Plus, the socks are really cool (partially because they have the cool Rumble logo that was designed way back in 2003 by Bronco Billy).

The Course

The 40-mile is mostly trail with some dirt road sections. The first quarter is gentle uphill, second quarter is gentle downhill, third quarter starts with a gentle up before a couple of longish, 2-mile uphill grinders, and the final quarter is gentle downhill (with some sweet views!), making for a fast finish. Mud and snowy sections are possible. Total vert for the 40-miler is about 2,700′.

The trail marathon is mostly trail with some dirt road sections. The first half is mostly gentle uphill and the second half is mostly gentle downhill. This distance shares the same course as the 40-miler to mile 25, where it then finishes the last 2+ miles with the 20-miler, giving you a bonus mile+ because hey, it’s a trail marathon. Total vert is about 1700′.

The 20-mile is gentle uphill for the first half, and gentle downhill for the second half. Upon reaching the ridge, there are beautiful views of many of the Central Oregon Cascades peaks. Total vert for the 20-miler is about 1000′.

Aid Stations and Drop Bags

The 40-mile will have 5 full aid stations and 2 limited stations; the marathon will have 3 full aid stations and 2 limited aid stations; the 20-mile will have 4 aid stations. Aid stations are located approximately every 3-7 miles. For the 40 mile, you can leave drop bags for AS 3/4 and AS 6 outside the tennis courts on race morning. Aid stations will serve water, Nuun, cola, gels (limited), fruit, pb&j, candy, chips, etc.

No crewing allowed outside of crew-allowed aid stations for 40-mile and marathon; no crewing allowed at all for 20-mile.

At approximately mile 25, just after crossing the Whychus Creek foot bridge where the 40-milers turn off the long, straight road to run their second big loop, you need to be there by 12:45 p.m. That is 5 hours and 30 min. from the start. If you are a 40-miler and arrive there after 12:45 p.m., volunteers will direct you straight to the finish with the marathoners. If you get there before 12:45 p.m., you will be directed to the 40 mile loop.

Absolute finish cutoff for 40-miler is 5 p.m. This is a 16:21 min/mi average. Please realize this is for the benefit of the many Rumble volunteers so they aren’t out there longer than what is reasonable. Thank you for your understanding on this.

40-mi Crew Directions

Start to AS 3/4: Drive east on McKenzie Hwy toward Sisters. Turn right at “T” onto Cascade Ave. Turn right on Elm / Three Creek Rd. Go a little over 5 miles to the top of the steep hill. The aid station is on the left, across the street from the parking lot for the Whychus Creek Overlook Trail.

Start to AS 7: Go west on McKenzie Hwy / Hwy 242 about 1/2 mile. Turn left on Pole Creek Rd / FS 15. Drive approx. 2.5 miles to FS 100, turn left. Drive another 1/4 mile and you’re at the Cow Camp Aid Station.

If you arrive at any of these aid stations after the cutoff time, arrangements will be made to drive you back to the finish area. Thank you for your understanding.

20-mi – No crews allowed at your aid stations! They are extremely busy aid stations and don’t need your crew to get in the way.
